In this sweeping second chance romance from debut author Myah Ariel, the unexpected spark of two former flames may force them to choose between their dreams and each other.
Kaliya Wilson has paid her dues. But all the years behind the reception desk at a flashy film studio have only pushed her movie-making dreams further out of reach. That is, until a surprise reunion presents an opportunity that could make her career, or break her heart…a second time.
It’s been seven years since Kaliya’s whirlwind college romance with Danny Prescott went up in flames. While her passions have stalled, his career is taking off. So when the hot shot director reappears to offer her a job on his next production, it’s a shock to the system. Working with Danny may recapture the intensity of their film school days, but trusting him again won’t come as easily.
As the pair allows themselves the openness and vulnerability to entrust their deepest truths to each other, the possibility of a true connection draws ever closer. But when Hollywood politics and scandal threaten to sink the production and her career, Kaliya may have to risk everything to do what’s right—even if it means letting go of the second chance love of a lifetime.

Ariel’s sensitive debut explores the experiences of people of color in Hollywood. Kaliya Wilson’s big dream of becoming a film producer brought her to Los Angeles—where she got stuck in a dead-end receptionist job. A chance to kick start her career finally comes but from the last person she expected: Danny Prescott, a rising hot-shot director and Kaliya’s college ex. Danny offers Kaliya a chance to work on his next production, and despite the heartbreak she’s still healing from, she seizes the opportunity. Their reunion brings back memories of film school and reignites Kaliya’s passion for cinema—along with her old feelings for Danny. Working together fosters their attraction, but faced with the hard truths of the film industry’s overwhelming whiteness—along with an on-set scandal that threatens to divert production—Kaliya must figure out whether staying in Hollywood—and with Danny—is right for her. Danny and Kaliya rediscover their old rhythms at a believable clip, making it easy to see why their relationship works, and Kaliya proves a wonderful heroine whose strength and passion in the face of adversity will have readers cheering. Ariel is an exciting new voice in romance. Agent: Kim Lionetti, BookEnds.

Narrator DeWanda Wise shares Kaliya Wilson's rise from frustrated desk worker to production assistant for director Danny Prescott's historical film on school desegregation. Wise's mellifluous narration style and Ariel's first-person point of view bring listeners into Kaliya's story, especially her past romance with Danny and her doubts about their current interactions. Her pacing in conversations is excellent, and her short silences allow listeners to absorb and empathize. She weaves in small moments of humor, female empowerment, and celebration set against the employment challenges of a Black female filmmaker. Danny's voice is lower and more level than Kaliya's, and listeners can hear their chemistry in Wise's voicings. Her voice for Danny's ex is less distinguishable. Nonetheless, Wise's discerning narration gives this romance appropriate depth. C.A. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine
