When it comes to love, hex marks the spot in this enchanting romance that will delight fans of Practical Magic and The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches. . .

As a child, Delia Merriweather believed with all her heart that she was a witch. Because all Merriweather women were witches. There was just one problem: they had no magic. As an adult, Delia no longer believes magic even exists. However, when she accidentally breaks a hex and restores her family's powers, she's forced to accept a new reality: she is a witch. And maybe that's why the crushingly handsome guy next door has been looking at her like he's expecting her to fly off on a broomstick, cackling into the night.

Just when Max thinks he's done keeping an eye on the bumbling Merriweather women, now he must help his neighbors learn to control their magic before they out witches everywhere. But Delia can't decide if Max is helping or hexing, and Max can't tell whether his growing feelings for Delia are real, or if he's come under the spell of the most powerful—and clueless—witch he's ever known. And the last thing Max needs is to fall for the one witch who could rule the entire witching world by controlling the hearts of men.

Bloom (Must Love Cowboys) successfully mixes Southern charm with magic in her first foray into the paranormal. Delia Merriweather has been told all her life that she is a blue witch with power over love and matters of the heart. Under the blue moon on her 30th birthday, she will finally come into power—or she would if her family were able to access their magic. Unfortunately, the Merriweathers have been hexed into powerlessness, and, with no proof of the mystical, 29-year-old Delia has stopped believing in magic altogether. As her birthday approaches, she struggles to balance her family’s eccentricities with public opinion in small town Willow Root, Tex. Meanwhile, Max Halifax, her hot new next-door neighbor and a witch in his own right, has been sent to Willow Root from the hidden magical realm of Shadowlark to watch the Merriweather women and ensure the hex holds. If Delia manages to break the spell, magical mayhem will ensue and Max will no longer be able to tell if his growing feelings for her are true or the result of her blue witch powers. Bloom creates a whimsical and enchanting world in Willow Root and conjures some real chemistry between her leads. Fans of Practical Magic and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch will be hooked.

Cordelia Merriweather has always been told that she is a blue witch who will break the hex that prevents her family from having magic. Yet as her 30th birthday and another blue moon approach, Cordelia has lost her belief in magic; now she simply enjoys her family's quirky traditions. Maximus Halifax, however, knows that magic is real. He is a finder of dangerous magical artifacts, which is why he is tasked with packing up his uncle's mansion next door to the Merriweather women, along with ensuring that Delia does not break her family's hex. However, Max was not expecting to encounter Delia's endearing family or the feelings that Delia sparks in him. When it becomes clear that Delia has mysteriously broken the hex releasing their magic, the high priestess wants Max to rehex the Merriweathers, so the couple must come to terms with what heart magic really means. VERDICT Bloom (Must Love Cowboys) creates a delightfully cozy and magical Southern town that will make readers wish they could visit. Hand to those who enjoy a slow-burn romance with strong family ties; the humor compensates for the delayed start of the sizzling heat between Delia and Max.--Morgan Lockard

A dual narration by Zion Jang and Laura Knight Keating plays up the contrast between proper witch Max and Texan Delia Merriweather, whose magic is trapped by a hex. Keating gives Delia a twangy accent that rings with both humor and confusion as she puzzles out her feelings for her new neighbor and discovers her power. Keating's voices for Delia's eccentric family members are equally irreverent. Jang's quieter, controlled voice for Max rises in pitch as Delia's bewildering human ways befuddle him. Jang also voices Max's imp and Max's brother, who have different accents and mannerisms. For those who like their magic a little wacky and their romance topsy-turvy, Keating and Jang mix up a lively series opener. C.A. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine

Bloom's (Must Love Cowboys) delightfully witchy romance follows 29-year-old Delia Merriweather, whose family believes they are witches. They've told Delia that they were hexed long ago and no longer have access to their magic; ever the skeptic, Delia doesn't really believe them, but she loves them so much that she doesn't argue. Delia has always been told she's a blue witch born under a blue moon, destined to release the family's powers on her 30th birthday. Max Halifax is a warlock whose family was responsible for hexing the Merriweathers generations earlier. He is tasked with preventing Delia from overturning the curse but finds himself increasingly drawn to her. When Delia unintentionally unlocks her powers, Max sticks close, helping her harness her newfound abilities before she accidentally reveals the existence of the witch community. Zion Jang and Lauren Knight narrate this fast-paced, emotionally rich romance. Their narration is balanced and evenly paced, with consistent, distinct voices for the main characters. VERDICT A charming story with "Sleeping Beauty" undertones that will make a great addition to contemporary paranormal romance collections. This novel may also appeal to fans of Erin Sterling and Hazel Beck.--Shannon O'Connor
