A novel of women's friendship, resilience, and legacy from the author of The Proper Care and Maintenance of Friendship and Friendship Makes the Heart Grow Fonder.
Claire Petrenko always knew it was coming. Breast cancer has already claimed both her mother and her younger sister. Now, as she cobbles the pieces of her life back together, the devastating family legacy returns, and Claire receives the same diagnosis. So when her old friend Jenna Hogan suddenly shows up at her door - like a fairy godmother offering to grant a wish - Claire seizes the chance to revisit her past . . . and salvage her future.
What begins as an impulsive trip soon becomes an odyssey as the women cross the country, gathering friends as they make their way to their childhood home of Pine Lake. There, they discover that Jenna's random act of kindness has rippled out into the world like a stone dropped into a pond, surging back to transform all their lives in ways they never expected.

When Jenna leaves Seattle, she is looking to leave behind the heartache of her failed marriage and gain perspective while helping a friend in need. She arrives in Oregon offering to assist Claire, whom she hasn't seen in 16 years, while Claire recovers from a double mastectomy and prepares to battle cancer. The only thing Claire really wants, however, is to get away for a while by visiting their childhood hometown in upstate New York. So together they drive to California to pick up another long-lost friend, and the three set out on a cross-country drive that brings them back in touch with many other faces from the past and with the life problems they have each been trying to avoid. As the miles tick past, Jenna, Claire, and Nicole find that this journey through the American hinterland is as much about personal growth and discovery as it is a rekindling of friendships. Fans of chick lit will enjoy this humorous and uplifting homage to good friendships and a variety of Americana.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)
