Gr 9 UpThis short documentary spotlights digital media artist Laurence Gartel and his work in an interview format as he discusses his processes and digital media in general. Gartel is considered by many to be the father of digital media. He takes a photo and, using different computer software, enhances it to create a unique piece of art. His favorite piece, "Coney Island Baby," is a collage of parts of photos that speak to the history of Coney Island. Every line of this wonderfully constructed visual feast takes the eye from detail to detail to create the feel of action while vibrant colors create a kaleidoscope of motion and mood. Among his influences are Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, and Nam June Paik. He admonishes aspiring artists to "make some noise" and constantly push the limits of comfort to be successful. Grades 5-8 The seventh volume in the Keys to the Kingdom series, which begins with Mister Monday (2003) and cycles through the days of the week, brings this fantasy adventure to a fitting conclusion. From chapter to chapter, the storys focus shifts from its young hero, Arthur, to the separate but intertwined adventures of his friends Leaf and Suzy Turquoise Blue. Everything comes to a head in this final series entry in which Arthur struggles with his newly acquired power while battling Lord Sunday. Meanwhile, Suzy and Leaf, on their own paths, face additional challenges. As with earlier series entries, the action is very fast paced in a world replete with intriguing magical devices.
