Noelle is not a fan of the holidays and to make matters worse, she is at a crossroads in her life when it seems that love and adventure are no longer possible. When she stays late at her job in a department store on a snowy Christmas Eve she accidentally gets locked in after closing. She isn't too concerned about the prospect of spending the night in the store . . . until a woman appears out of nowhere and tells Noelle that she's her guardian angel.
Soon Noelle finds herself camped out in the shoe department facing several "ghosts" of Christmases past, present, and future . . . all while surrounded by Manolo Blahniks, Jimmy Choos, Chanel slippers, and Prada riding boots. Will visiting the holidays of yesterday and tomorrow help Noelle see the true spirit of Christmas? And will the love she has longed for all her life be the best surprise gift of all?

It's not surprising that when the New York Times best-selling Harbison locks up her heroine in a department store on Christmas Eve, the poor woman must face the ghosts of Christmases past, present, and future amid Manolo Blahniks and Jimmy Choos in the shoe department. After all, Harbison is the author of Shoe Addicts Anonymous.

On Christmas Eve, Noelle emerges from her office at Simon's Department Store and finds herself locked in for the night while a snowstorm rages outside. Enjoying having the place to herself, Noelle is surprised when a batty old lady shouting "Zooterkins" suddenly appears out of nowhere and claims to be her guardian angel. As the angel and various pairs of designer shoes transport Noelle back through sad holiday memories, she's shown what could have happened if she'd been less fearful. The visions of what could be convince Noelle to join her friend on a trip to Rome and finally stop avoiding her fate, which seems to involve a handsome guy named Jake. VERDICT A fun and shoe-filled modern take on A Christmas Carol from the best-selling Harbison (One Less Problem Without You) for all readers. [See Prepub Alert, 4/18/16.]
