Freelance writer Jaine Austen thought working for a knock-off reality show in the tropics would be paradise. But when she and her kitty Prozac find themselves trapped between a dimwitted leading man, catty contestants, and a cold-blooded murderer, the splashy gig becomes one deadly nightmare . . .
Jaine's life has been a royal pain since she started penning dialogue for Some Day My Prince Will Come—a cheesy dating show that features bachelorettes competing for the heart of Spencer Dalworth VII, a very distant heir to the British throne. But when one of the finalists dies in a freak accident, it's clear someone wanted the woman out of the race for good—and the police won't allow a soul off the island until they seize the culprit. Terrified of existing another day without air conditioning and eager to return home, Jaine is throwing herself into the investigation. And she better pounce on clues quickly—or there won't be any survivors left . . .

Jaine Austen thinks she has finally hit the big time in Levine’s lighthearted 15th mystery featuring the L.A. freelance writer (after 2016’s Murder Has Nine Lives). She has landed a scriptwriting gig on Some Day My Prince Will Come, a reality TV show set on Paratito Island, just a short hop from Tahiti. Three bachelorettes will vie for the affections of Spencer Dalworth VII, Earl of Swampshire. Unfortunately, Paratito is a festering backwater, the bachelorettes are scheming harpies, and Spencer is an inarticulate dope. Things really go south when bachelorette Hope Harper goes skydiving with a sabotaged parachute and plunges to her death. Another bachelorette is arrested for the deed, but Jaine is convinced she isn’t guilty and begins her own investigation. Which isn’t easy, considering that she also has to keep her escape artist kitty, Prozac, out of trouble, and get out of her accidental engagement to toothless King Konga of Paratito. Plenty of slapstick humor makes up for the lack of plausibility and character development. Agent: Evan Marshall, Evan Marshall Agency. -

There's trouble in paradise for a freelance writer working on a reality television show.Anyplace that's just half an hour by air from Tahiti sounds like a perfect spot for optimal work/life balance. So when Jaine Austen (Murder Has Nine Lives, 2016, etc.) gets an invitation to write dialogue for Some Day My Prince Will Come, shot on location on Paratito Island, she tells producer Manny Kaminsky yes, yes, yes, provided she can bring her cat, Prozac, along for the ride. It's not until she arrives on the set of the Bachelorette knockoff that she discovers not all tropical Utopias are created equal. While cheapskate Manny lives in a climate-controlled mansion and dines on filet mignon, he stashes his staff in the attic (sorry--no AC) and feeds them outdated airline meals he's bought in bulk. The field of contestants is down to three--redheaded Brianna, perky blonde Hope, and bitchy brunette Dallas--and the competition is so fierce that they're stealing each others' hair extensions, all for a prize who's no prize. Dimwitted Spencer Dalworth VII, not even a prince but a mere earl, can't remember any line longer than "Brilliant!" Jaine's ready to hitchhike back to LA when a murder literally drops out of the sky. The Paratito Island police force puts both of its officers on the case, but at the rate they're moving, their homeland will be submerged by global warming before they solve it. That leaves Jaine, who has to divide her time between dodging 60-something King Konga of Paratito, who's bent on making her his 12th wife, and cracking the case so everyone can leave. The cast and crew of a reality show are perfect foils for sharp-tongued Jaine, who outwits everyone on the set, except possibly her cat.COPYRIGHT(2017) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
