From best-selling author Rita Mae Brown, another clever, endearing story in the Foxhunting mystery series. Lushly described scenes from the hunt, talking animals who help solve the murder, and the beloved Sister Jane reunite to continue the New York Times best-selling mystery series. Book five, which focuses on the hound, draws us into the murky financial scandals of foxhunting society-including a sharp-tongued, wheelchair-bound hellion of a bookkeeper, and a rich former hunt club donor who thinks he can out-class the intrepid Sister Jane with the purchase of his own pack of hounds. Only Sister Jane, along with her furry friends who, per usual, discuss the intrigues amongst themselves, is able to uncover the mystery of the missing money and the dead body! Keep in mind, in American foxhunting, the foxes always get away-so this is a series for animal lovers as well as the sporting crowd!

Rita Mae Brown continues to explore Southern culture, particularly fox-hunting, in this diverting, atmospheric mystery while delivering a commendable performance as narrator. At times, she instructs readers on the technicalities of raising horses and hounds overmuch. However, listeners are mostly entertained as heroine "Sister" Jane Arnold, master of the foxhounds, sorts out an insurance scam, investigates murder and attempted murder, and locates a sum of money missing from a neighboring factory. Brown's voice is not strong and lacks some versatility, but she makes up for it in enthusiasm and emotion as she artfully portrays the human and animal worlds. S.C.A. In bestseller Brown's diverting fifth foxhunting mystery (after 2005's The Hunt Ball
), "Sister" Jane Arnold, the 73-year-old master of foxhounds at central Virginia's Jefferson Hunt Club, and a host of anthropomorphized dogs, horses, foxes and birds have their work cut out for them. As Sister prepares for the winter hunt, arrogant arriviste Crawford Howard acquires an "outlaw" pack of hounds and proceeds to set up a rival event on land long used by the Jefferson Hunt, a plan that threatens to tear the community apart. "People are like teabags. You never know how strong they are until you put them in hot water," notes Sister, who with her usual panache sorts out a murder, an attempted murder, an insurance scam and a huge sum of money gone missing from a local company. Cozy fans and animal lovers will be charmed, but the general reader may lose patience with the talking critters.
