No names are shared, and their weekly romantic liaisons are kept secret, but what should have been an uncomplicated arrangement turns deadly serious when Adanel's father, the evil Laird Mackbaythe, discovers her secret, locks her in a tower, and sends her brother to kill the McTiernay who supposedly impregnated his daughter. Mistaken identity, revenge, murder, and misunderstanding may lead to war if Dugan and Adanel cannot forge a union that will take down the corrupt Laird Mackbaythe and pacify the mistrustful northern clans.
