Like everyone else, celebrities eventually die, giving the public one last opportunity to peek into their lives. Obituaries and eulogies offer up the high points of a person's life and career for his or her audience. In this collection, Copeland, who formerly worked in advertising, aims to present the greatest eulogies of our time, claiming that he sought to include an "eclectic mix of cultural heroes." But from the very onset, it is unclear what criteria he used to make his choices. One guess is that for him a famous person plus a well-known eulogist equals a great eulogy. Readers will recognize most of the 70 individuals eulogized here, who include astronauts, performers, explorers, writers, and other public figures. Still, more background would have been appropriate. No historical context is provided for the eulogy as a form of rhetoric; nor is any commentary offered on the various types of eulogies presented. Aside from a short introduction, the editorial material consists of a brief time line of the person's life following each piece. This collection may be of slight interest to public libraries where there is demand for books about famous people.-Judy Solberg, George Washington Univ.
