Unlimiting God

Christians, according to Blackaby, are “satisfied to plod along in dreary, unrewarding spirituality” and have “chosen to limit their experience of God.” If this former pastor and seminary president, well-known preacher and bestselling author has anything to say about it, Christians will soon “blow past every limitation” they’ve ever set for themselves in their Christian life. The issue isn’t God, he says, but us. Blackaby addresses some common limitations to a vital spiritual life, as well as how to overcome those limitations. The somewhat platitudinal list includes such statements as “God will not reveal more truth to you than you’re capable of receiving,” “God will match His assignments with your character and your walk with Him” and “We determine the amount of joy we experience from God.” Blackaby offers stories and liberal use of Scripture throughout, encouraging Christians to revitalize their relationship with God. Readers won’t find sparkling freshness here. They will, however, find help in rediscovering spiritual truths they’ve heard before, this time told against the backdrop of Blackaby’s heritage (his father is noted Christian leader Henry Blackaby) and experience. Blackaby’s book is a serviceable first step toward the radical commitment he claims God requires.
