      Neill's fourth entry in the Heirs of Chicagoland series (after Shadowed Steel, 2021) starts with Elisa Sullivan getting the call to rescue a supernatural informant, Rose, from a Chicago-area bedroom community. But Rose disappears after a freak ghost attack at a historical landmark. Digging into the incident, Elisa and her colleagues uncover a secret hidden since the Chicago fire--a chaos demon wreaked havoc on the city in 1872. Worse, that demon is Rose, and Elisa and her partner are responsible for getting Rose through the wards that have kept her out of Chicago. Elisa's problems don't stop there. In addition to catching Rose, Elisa must help her shape-shifter boyfriend, Connor, stave off interlopers looking to destabilize the Pack while coping with the revelation that her best friend, Lulu, can only work dark magic. There's also the little problem of her vampire clan home disappearing, with Connor's, Lulu's, and her parents all inside. There is a lot going on within the novel and its multiple subplots, but fans of Neill's will enjoy returning to the world of Cadogan House and those connected to it.
