Recently widowed Cathleen Almera, feeling threatened by the unwanted attentions of her police-officer husband's former partner, brings her four-year-old son to stay with her at the Chance Animal Shelter. The shelter doubles as a covert sanctuary for humans in trouble too, and Cathleen and her son are soon taken in and given new identities, while the young widow hides from the man who she believes murdered her husband. Clark Martindale is also staying at the shelter, posing undercover as a resident to try and discover who might be exposing their operation to danger. Once he meets Cathleen and her son, though, he knows he won't be able to rest until he brings the man who is threatening her to justice--even if it costs him everything in the end. VERDICT Unfortunately, this latest series entry, after Guardian K-9 on Call, contains stilted dialogue and protagonists who lack chemistry, providing an unsatisfying reading experience.--Rebecca Moe
