Quality family togetherness—everyone wants it, but it seems increasingly harder to achieve. In a world run by cell phones, computers, and virtual networking, the comfort of human connection grows more important— and rarer— all the time. In a guide newly updated for the next generation, family expert Meg Cox offers a solution. Family rituals provide a sense of home and identity that kids and parents both need. From holidays and birthdays to bed times, meal times, pets, and even chores, The Book of New Family Traditions spotlights hundred of ways to bring the fun and ritual back to family life.

Starred review from November 15, 2012

In this revised edition of her 2003 title, Cox (The Quilter's Catalog: A Comprehensive Resource Guide) strikes gold again with a book every family can appreciate. Defining a family ritual as "anything that is purposefully repeat[ed] together as a family ...that lifts it above the ordinary ruts," she outlines the good things that rituals do for children, including teaching values, solving problems, navigating change, and providing comfort and security. Far exceeding a list of the obvious holiday activities, her book covers everything from summer vacation ideas to traditions for pet funerals to ceremonies for giving up the binky. Cox's new edition responds to the harried, tech-focused qualities of our modern lives and includes solid suggestions, such as "Freedom Day," which means no lessons, obligations, outings, or appointments. VERDICT Browseable, readable, doable, and lovable, this stellar offering belongs on the shelf of every library and every kid's home.
