A hilarious love story about a disillusioned divorcée who agrees to let her children play matchmaker.

Columnist Anna Appleby has left her love life behind after a painful divorce. Who needs a man when she has two kids, a cat, and uncontested control of the TV remote? Besides, she’d rather be single than subject herself to the hell of online dating. But her office rival is vying for her column, and no column means no stable source of income. In a desperate attempt to keep her job, Anna finds herself pitching a unique angle: seven dates, all found offline, chosen by her children.
From awkward encounters to unexpected connections, Anna gamely begins to put herself out there, asking out waiters, the mailman, and even her celebrity crush. But when a romantic connection appears where she least expected it, will she be brave enough to take another chance on love?

In this appealing enemies-to-lovers romance, bestseller Cousens (The Good Part) pairs a stressed-out, recently divorced mother of two with her hot new coworker. The new owner of Bath Living magazine wants to reach a younger audience, so writer Anna Appleby needs to up her game. Otherwise, the annoying (and distractingly attractive) Will Havers will get her column and perhaps her job, too. Anna reluctantly agrees to write about the dating scene in Bath, England, and accepts her boss’s proposed hook: her preteen children will get to choose who she dates. The results are both awkward and amusing, sending Anna out with the morose father of one of their classmates, their waiter at a hip restaurant, and the forbidding next-door neighbor, among others. Will, with whom Anna grows closer the more they work together, begins to seem very appealing in contrast, especially as he proves himself to be unexpectedly kind. While the happily ever after is never in doubt, Cousens fills the path there with laughter and surprises, and strikes a good balance between romance and family life. This is a charmer.

Narrator Kerry Gilbert embodies spunky journalist Anna Appleby, a newly divorced mother of two who has sworn off love and dating in this charming British rom-com. As Anna valiantly juggles work commitments and her children's needs, her new co-worker, Will, makes a move to take over her weekly column. To keep her job, Anna pitches a new column idea that has her children choosing her dates as an alternative to online dating. Each outing is filled with embarrassing mishaps, as well as joy and new connections for Anna. Gilbert's dialogue is entertaining and authentic, and the banter between Anna and Will is top-notch. Overall, Gilbert's narration is warm and relatable but also vulnerable as Anna bravely starts a new chapter with innumerable possibilities. C.A.P. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine

Fans of the film How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days will get a kick out of Cousens's (The Good Part) latest romantic comedy, featuring Anna, a divorced single mom of two whose pitch for a dating column opens up new horizons. Forced to freshen up her column at Bath Living magazine, Anna pitches a series of articles about going on seven dates that her kids choose for her. Meanwhile, she manages a workplace rivalry with Will, a younger reporter who always seems keen to one-up Anna. The more time Anna and Will spend together, though, the more she comes to realize that she's misunderstood Will and that there's more to him than she assumed. This charming audio is narrated by Kerry Gilbert, who voices the characters with empathy even as she captures their witty banter and steamy chemistry. VERDICT A hilarious and heartfelt book about taking a chance on love after divorce and learning how to coparent amicably. This engaging rom-com should be just the ticket for fans of Falon Ballard's Just My Type or Andie J. Christopher's Not the Girl You Marry.--Shannon O'Connor
