Darby Kane, author of the #1 international bestseller Pretty Little Wife, returns with another twisty domestic thriller about a wife wondering who tried to kill her husband twice before finally succeeding... because that was supposed to be her job.

Dr. Richmond Dougherty is a renowned pediatric surgeon, an infamous tragedy survivor, and a national hero. He's also very dead—thanks to a fall down the stairs. His neighbors angrily point a finger at the newest Ms. Dougherty, Addison. The sudden marriage to the mysterious young woman only lasted ninety-seven days, and he'd had two suspicious "accidents" during that time. Now Addison is a very rich widow.

As law enforcement starts to circle in on Addison and people in town become increasingly hostile, sides are chosen with Kathryn, Richmond's high school sweetheart, wife number one, and the mother of his children, leading the fray. Despite rising tensions, Addison is even more driven to forge ahead on the path she charted years ago...

Determined at all costs to unravel Richmond's legacy, she soon becomes a target—with a shocking note left on her bedroom wall: You will pay. But it will take a lot more than faceless threats to stop Addison. Her plan to marry Richmond then ruin him may have been derailed by his unexpected death, but she's not done with him yet.

The new bride of a well-known pediatric surgeon is accused of his murder in the spellbinding latest from Kane (The Engagement Party). Barely three months after Addison and Richmond Dougherty tie the knot, Richmond takes a fatal tumble down the stairs of their palatial home in Rye, N.Y. Though police immediately suspect Addison, her alibi—that she was with her mother at a diner when Richmond died—appears airtight. Instead, one of the late doctor’s disgruntled business partners and the father of a young patient who died during surgery become the main persons of interest. In flashbacks, Kane details how Addison’s mother blackmailed her into marrying Richmond, and explores his previous marriage to Kathryn, a beloved figure among Rye’s upper crust. In the present, Addison’s neighbors turn on her, and a series of anonymous notes left in her home make her fear that whoever killed Richmond might come after her next. Kane keeps readers brilliantly off-balance, obscuring everyone’s motives until they become crystal-clear in the jaw-dropping finale. Readers won’t be able to put this down. Agent: Laura Bradford, Bradford Literary.

Addison isn't surprised that someone killed her husband, Dr. Richmond Dougherty. She's just a little annoyed that they beat her to the punch. During their six-month marriage, no love was lost between the two. Addison loathed Richmond playing the part of a heroic pediatric surgeon, when she alone knew his dark, disturbing truth. Richmond didn't love that Addison upended his life and blackmailed him into marrying her. Though it's clear what Addison stood to gain from Richmond's death, she must now discover who offed him first and why, or else she might be next. Kane (The Engagement Party) crafts a fast-paced, suspenseful domestic thriller with rich detail and compelling drama. Narrators Helen Laser and Andrew Eiden present the multiple perspectives and timelines in a twisting tumult of he said/she said intensity. Eiden portrays Richmond with a scathing animosity that borders on evil, while Laser depicts the leading women, primarily Addison, with an expressive range of emotion. The combination creates an atmospheric and engrossing listening experience. VERDICT This audio will appeal to listeners seeking an intricate, unputdownable domestic thriller about family secrets worth dying for. Recommended for fans of Alyssa Cole, Sally Hepworth, and Alice Feeney.--Lauren Hackert
